Heritage
Edinburgh Castle. National ceremony. Light on history.
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
The Challenge
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo — one of the world’s most iconic live events, performed nightly on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle to audiences of 8,800. Televised to 100 million viewers globally. The brief: bring the castle façade to life through projection mapping that honoured military tradition while captivating a modern audience.
The constraints were formidable: a UNESCO World Heritage setting, military precision timing, live performances from international bands, unpredictable Scottish weather, and the expectations of a global broadcast audience. Every element had to be flawless.
The Approach
We mapped the full façade of Edinburgh Castle — one of the most complex architectural surfaces in projection mapping. The visuals were choreographed to military precision, synchronised with pipe bands, international military ensembles, and the ceremonial lone piper.
The content told Scotland’s story through the castle’s own architecture: stone became liquid, battlements became banners, and centuries of history played out across the ramparts. Each scene was designed for both the live audience on the esplanade and the global television broadcast — two very different viewing experiences served by one unified visual narrative.
